(CelebrityAccess) — Soul and gospel legend Candi Staton announced that after 10 weeks of chemotherapy and 30 rounds of radiation, she has won her battle against breast cancer.

“So proud to report I’m free of cancer,” Staton said in a post on her Instagram account. “Thank you all for your prayers and encouraging words. I love you all.”

Staton revealed that she was battling breast cancer last fall in an interview with Rolling Stone, telling the publication that she learned about her diagnosis while on tour last summer. At the time, she decided to keep her diagnosis private and continue the remainder of the tour.

“I went onstage each night knowing I had something abnormal growing inside my body that might take my life,” Staton told Elridge ATL’s Rich Eldredge.  “But I went out there and I performed like it was my last time on stage, like I might never sing again. That was the emotion and the energy I put into it. Because I was thinking, ‘Maybe this is the last time.’ I didn’t know. I just put everything I had into my music and when I was on stage each night, I didn’t think about the cancer. I didn’t bring it onstage with me. I left the cancer in the dressing room.”

Staton, who has four Grammy nominations, scored hits for her R&B takes on “Stand by Your Man,” “Suspicious Minds,” and “In the Ghetto,” as well as “Young Hearts Run Free.”
