Joe Manchin is an American politician and businessperson. A Democrat, he has served as a U.S. Senator from West Virginia, since November 15, 2010, and a Ranking Member of the Senate Energy Committee, since January 3, 2019. He was previously Secretary of State of West Virginia, from January 15, 2001 to January 17, 2005, Governor of West Virginia, from January 17, 2005 to November 15, 2010, and Chair of the National Governors Association, from July 11, 2010 to November 15, 2010, among other duties.
Joe was born in Farminton, West Virginia, a small coal mining town, the son of Mary O. (Gouzd) and John Manchin. His father and grandfather both served as the town’s mayor. He is married to educator and politician Gayle Conelly Manchin, with whom he has three children, including business executive Heather Bresch.
Joe’s father’s family was from San Giovanni in Fiore, Province of Cosenza, Calabria. His mother is of Czech descent.
His uncle, A. James Manchin, was a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, West Virginia Secretary of State, and the state’s Treasurer.
